Playa de Las Americas in Tenerife has long been synonymous with fun sun filled holidays, partying and revelry. Over the last few decades literally millions of holidaymakers from across the world have spent a week or two in the resort of Playa de Las Americas. They came here for the superb climate, beautiful beaches and of course fun in the sun. During this period Playa de Las Americas became tarnished with a reputation of drunken Club 18-30 guests creating havoc, poor quality holiday accommodation and many other kinds of horror stories but over the last ten years or so the area of Playa de Las Americas has undergone a dramatic transformation. Yes you can still find a fun filled party atmosphere if you want to but new constructions, changes to licensing laws and an improved infrastructure have created calm and serene areas in which you can forget all of your troubles and simply relax in beautiful surroundings.
Playa de Las Americas lies on the south west coast of Tenerife and commands fabulous views across the Atlantic Ocean towards the neighbouring islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Playa de Las Americas is bordered by Los Cristianos to the south and northwards the areas of San Eugenio and Torviscas. Modification of the main bus station location inland from the main resort has enabled quick and easy public transportation to the outlying areas of Callao Salvaje, Chayofa and even the capital of the island Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is a short one hour journey away. Traffic calming has been implemented, old road systems which encouraged a formula 1 style of driving have given way to pedestrianized areas and there has been huge investment in the parks and gardens of the area which has given a whole new look to the resort.
All of these changes have handed power back to the walkers and cyclists. Cars can be used here, but they now take a back seat which has resulted in the whole atmosphere of the area becoming more relaxed, friendly and appealing to all. A recently completed promenade stretches from Los Cristianos, through Playa de Las Americas and along the coast almost all the way to La Caleta which makes for a thoroughly enjoyable walk or cycle.
The changes made in Playa de Las Americas have only affected the infrastructure. There has been a knock on effect that has changed the complexion of the businesses in the area. There are still party areas such as Las Veronicas and Starco, which receive hundreds of thousands of visitors annually who inject much needed money in the economy. However new developments and the refurbishment of existing commercial areas have created many new and varied bars, restaurants and excursions within the resort. Relaxation of certain laws has promoted upmarket and exclusive beach bars and beachfront restaurants. The Golden Mile which includes the Santiago properties including Parque Santiago 3, the Pyramid de Arona and the Safari Shopping Centre are far removed from the Playa de Las Americas of old and they provide exclusive shopping and dining in attractive and modern surroundings. The newly constructed Magma Art and Conference Centre has been well received and host many popular concerts and events.
One of the biggest projects to benefit Playa de Las Americas was the newly constructed Siam Park. Siam Park is the largest waterpark in Europe and it has a larger water surface area than Wet and Wild in Florida. This waterpark has proved extremely popular with both tourists and residents alike and has created thousands of jobs which has also helped to boost the local economy.
The transformation that Playa de Las Americas has undergone over the last few years has not changed the resort beyond recognition, but has infact broadened the appeal of the area as a whole. Yes, you can still let your hair down and party, but the creation of new spaces and areas have reduced the size of the party area which has allowed more relaxing and enjoyable spaces to be created adding a more diverse appeal which has in turn attracted more and more people to the area.
