Loro Parque helps Critically Endangered birds

Article added 26/06/2010

The world famous Loro Parque has been working on a major project together with American Bird Conservancy (ABC) protecting a colony of the very rare Yellow-eared parrot, which was classified as probably extinct. A colony of 80 birds was found recently in South America and an operation was put in place to protect these valuable birds. Loro Parque and the American Bird Conservancy together with the Colombian ProAves Foundation have managed to control the environment over the last ten years enough to enable the colony to increase. Loro Parque has magnificent projects and included in these is a Mobil Classroom – an environmental education LORO BUS, which has visited 60 municipalities and departments in Colombia, teaching over 21,000 pupils from 101 schools, together with 5,000 individuals the seriousness of environmental and conservation today. The result of massive investment and education has resulted in the Yellow-eared parrot, from being critically endangered to endangered, the project is far from over, and now further work will be done, but this is a major breakthrough and the entities involved should be congratulated for the work done.
