The neighbouring island of EL HIERRO is preparing a very defiant plan; they want to be one of the first islands to be completely energy efficient. The installations are planned to be a mixture of energy productive via wind farms with a hydroelectric power station, also using the production of desalinated water for irrigation, creating biogas from waste, and using solar photovoltaic, solar thermal and wind installations in the residential sector, in combination with a integral alternative transport system. All this is planned to preserve the landscape and to lessen the detrimental impact from the electric grid. The island eventually would like to be with zero waste, and so keeping within the UNESCO network of Biosphere Reserves, due to the fabulous ecosystem and marvellous natural scenery. The population of El Hierro have always tried to retain and conserve their unspoilt island, giving the visitors, and themselves, as island of which to be very proud.
