Another first in Tenerife music world.

The island of Tenerife is keen to establish itself on the international music map. Part of the island's plan is to diversify from its most known attractions of the sun, beach, and sea. The Canary Islands and Tenerife in particular already hosts a number of music festivals on themes like jazz, baroque, symphony and classical music. Now Tenerife has a Festival of Contemporary Music, with the first taking place on June 19th and 20th in the capital Santa Cruz. The setting will be the stunning Auditorium of Tenerife which is particularly well-known for its waved roof. There will be two concerts but organisers hope the festival will grow in both stature and size. The future is for it to become an established part of the island’s music calendar. The island's leaders believe the spotlight needs to be turned on contemporary music of the 19th and 20th centuries and specifically on percussion. Over the years percussion has developed significantly and now there are a growing number of composers who write specifically for percussion instruments. The new festival is backed by the local goverment Canary Islands and the Tenerife Cabildo and ticket prices are already for sale. Both On Saturday, June 19th the first concert at 6.30 pm will star Tuopali Pais, a duo formed in 2000 to perform music especially written for percussion but combining it with different types of artistic expression. This duo have given concerts all over the world which include Mexico, Cuba and Argentina and also teach their art. They have also helped to organise the new festival and are delighted to be involved.
